Inequity remains a troubling reality for many public school students. Our schools are no longer recognized for their longstanding role in fostering citizens, and despite monumental progress in providing access for girls, children of color, and children with disabilities, we have allowed schools to grow even more segregated, racially and socioeconomically. We urgently need a renewed commitment to public education.

For over 30 years, the National Network for Educational Renewal (NNER) has worked across the nation to improve the reality of public school children and their communities. Our approach is distinct with an emphasis on enduring impact. We are experts in school districts, universities, and community organizations and businesses. Our nonprofit organization works to improve public school education with a keen focus on improving teacher education programs and schools simultaneously. Currently, NNER national member settings represent universities/colleges and k-12 school districts, ranging from rural to urban demographics and encompassing the entirety of racial and socioeconomic spectrums. Our members benefit from a rich network of teachers and teacher educators committed and immersed in the improvement of public schools.

We engage in ongoing professional development and distribution of resources and best practices. Yearly, we coordinate the NNER Annual Conference as the prime opportunity for members (and beyond) to engage in person. Yet, while the work of NNER continues to evolve and progress, we know we cannot do it alone. NNER relies on similar educational organizations to further this work in solidarity, and we depend on donations from individuals and organizations like you.*

The NNER Mission

The National Network for Educational Renewal (NNER) leads by example as it strives to improve simultaneously the quality of education for thoughtful participation in a democracy and the quality of the preparation of educators. The NNER works through partnerships among P-12 schools, institutions of higher education, and communities. Four-Part Mission Members of the Network agree on a four-part mission to advance Education in Democracy, which is as follows:

  • Provide access to knowledge for all children (“equity and excellence”);
  • Educate the young for thoughtful participation in a social and political democracy (“enculturation”);
  • Base teaching on knowledge of the subjects taught, established principles of learning, and sensitivity to the unique potential of learners (“nurturing pedagogy”); and
  • Take responsibility for improving the conditions for learning in P-12 schools, institutions of higher education and communities. (“stewardship”).

Revised and approved electronically by the NNER Governing Council, February 16, 2007.
