The College of Education at Winthrop University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Counseling, Leadership, and Educational Studies (full-time, 10.5-month tenure-track appointment). The desired candidate is an innovative, visionary leader for a department that serves approximately 300 undergraduate majors and 150 graduate students. The undergraduate programs housed in the department include Human Development and Family Studies, Middle Level Education, and Special Education. At the graduate level the department houses Counseling and Development, Educational Leadership, Learning Design and Technology, and Special Education Intervention.

Major Responsibilities:
• Provide effective academic leadership and developmental coaching to faculty and students in the department.
• Recruit and evaluate faculty and staff.
• Invest in and support faculty and staff professional growth.
• Manage departmental activities and programs while promoting innovation.
• Coordinate assessment and accreditation efforts of all programs areas.
• Supervise fiscal and physical operations of the department.
• Facilitate student recruitment, retention, and advising programs for majors.
• Oversee the continuing review of curricula to ensure relevance, rigor, and compliance with current accreditation requirements.
• Teach in the area of expertise as appropriate.
• Be a productive faculty member in all areas of university expectations – student intellectual development, scholarly activity, professional stewardship, and academic responsibility.
• Serve as an advocate for the department and its programs at the college and university levels.
• Foster cooperative efforts with other departments and programs in the college and university.
• Promote collaboration among faculty and with P-12 school and agency partners.
• Serve as a team member on the College Dean’s Council.

Required Qualifications:
• Doctorate in a field closely related to one of the department’s programs or core areas.
• Evidence of successful teaching, scholarship, and service consistent with the rank of associate or full professor.
• Evidence of strong leadership skills and experience consistent with the expectations of a department chair (experience as college department chair preferred).
• Knowledge of and experience with curriculum development, assessment, and accreditation processes.
• A minimum of three years successful work experience in a discipline represented by the department.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students and colleagues from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues at the departmental, college, university, public school, and agency levels.
• Commitment to distributive leadership with departmental faculty and staff.
• Proven success working in a team-oriented environment.

Employment Conditions: A full-time, 10.5-month tenure-track position

• Additional materials may be requested during the review process that document the candidate’s success in the areas of administrative or leadership experience, teaching, and/or scholarship.
