National Education Policy Symposium: Educating All Youth
Georgia
Southern University
February,
2010
In
Collaboration with the International Conference on the Scholarship of
Teaching and Learning
and
the
SINO-American
Consortium
Recommendation:
Delay any policy conference until at least Spring 2010.
Rationale for delaying the conference.
-
iNet is in transition. Need to determine ‘fit’ after changes occur.
-
Cindi is stepping down from the Dean’s position and seeking a Fulbright for Fall 2009. If funded, she will be abroad in Fall 2009.
-
With internal political changes, we need to focus on the work in the US prior to any international work. When we began these discussions, the event was to ‘inform’ the elections. It is too late for that. Therefore a refocus of the work needs to occur.
-
Publication of the excellent work A Broader, Bolder Approach to Education along with the excellent work of the AED Scholars, suggests an opportunity to refocus the policy conference work in a in a direction that will be useful/meaningful to both NNER and the AED Scholars.
-
need to refocus the policy conference work.
Suggested Timeline and Activities
NNER Conference Sept 2008
-
Present new ideas to Governing Board, AED group, etc. for input and approval.
-
AED Scholars: At that meeting, groups will convene around the issues, and each group will determine who will do what work in preparing a scholarly statement that builds on the brief statements developed in May. These scholarly statements, while not expected to be as long or as thoroughly documented as Alan Wood’s paper, are to be reflective pieces that can contribute to additional scholarly study and action by practitioners. Work on these statements will continue during the remainder of 2008 up to October 2009.
NNER Conference, October 2009
-
AED Scholars Present their work at the October 2009 10-year anniversary of John Goodlad's In Praise of Education Conference in Seattle. This setting will provide a good venue for sharing the detailed reflections on these issues that are crucial to the advancement of the Agenda for Education in a Democracy.
-
Determine policy questions yet unanswered, needing additional examination, etc. to frame the work for February 2010 Policy Conference.
Policy Conference, February 2010 (Hosted by Georgia Southern University)
-
National policy conference focusing on the NNER site states.
-
Delving further into policy issues, examining unanswered questions from the AED and
-
Moving from policy to practice: ‘Putting legs’ to the policy recommendations via the Tripartite in partnership with the AED Scholars.
-
Influence state and national policy makers.
-
International participants from China (SINO American Consortium) and many other countries (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Annual Conference). This meeting of the three conference groups will be attractive to all tripartite groups: SOTL conference attracts many higher ed arts and sciences faculty from many disciplines; NNER policy work will attract K-12 faculty as well as teacher ed. , the SINO-American Consortium attracts educator prep and arts and sciences faculty as well as K-12. It will also give the international ‘flavor’ to begin discussions about the need for an international policy conference.
Spring 2011 International Policy Conference (if desired, needed, etc.)
